Is this trek for you? |
This trek is proposed in view of those foreigners having the desire to explore a very different trekking route that is penetrated by few foreigners. You'll wander through moderate and cold climatic zones, be laid open to vast changes in landscape and vegetation and pass through many ethnic groups of people. Have plenty of photo opportunities and great view of Himalayas on the East. A good level of fitness is required. Expect 5-7 hrs walk a day.

After the sightseeing in Kathmandu we take our flight to Biratnagar. We will spend a night in Biratnagar before catching the flight to Taplejung to begin our trek. Our journey commences with an exciting flight over the mountain foothills, building anticipation for our trek. We have the chance to explore the Taplejung Bazaar walking the cobble stone streets. The trail makes a long circular descent along the mountainside to the terraced fields of Pokara where there is a suspension bridge over the Phawa Khola. From here our ascent is well worthwhile as the view from the Bhanjyang reveals Kangchenjunga and her satellites in all their glory. This is truly marvelous country with line upon line of forested ridges providing a wonderful disparity and setting to the rich flora and cultivated fields of the valleys. After camping on the grassy pastures, we pass the jungle and continue our way up and around the ridges on the west of Kabeli Khola. Passing through the terrace fields and the forest hills, our footsteps now lead us to the floor of the valley beside the blue green waters of the infant Ghunsa Khola. The village of Ghunsa is built of wooden houses where the Tibetans inhabit.
The terminal moraine of the Jannu glacier can be seen clearly ahead. As the moraine is reached a small bridge provides access across the river to a tiny grassclearing known as Rhampuk Kharka. We'll see the views to the north and east gradually opening out to include the peaks of Phole, Sobithonge and Jannu rising majestically above the moraines of the Jannu Glacier. Wonderful Mountain views in all directions can be seen with the ice flutings of Wedge Peak and the snowy ramparts of Nepal and Tent Peaks presenting the ideal backdrop for a colorful sunset.
You will be excited to discover the exhilarating spots like KAMBACHEN and LHONAK that will lead us to the Pangpema (The Kangchenjunga Base camp). The route to Pangpema from LHONAK provides stunning and progressive beauty of the valley, with Wedge , Nepal , Tent and Pyramid Peaks developing along with the Sharphu peaks as they dominatie the horizon. As we reach Pangpema on a small grassy shelf above the glacier the view to the south reveals the Twins and finally, the great north faces of Kangchenjunga and Yalung Kang.
Trekking this route provides the scenic beauty of breath taking landscapes, the Himalayas and above all warm greetings from the smiling locals. We sadly leave this region trekking back to the Taplejung where we fly back to Biratnagar and onto Kathmandu . |
